When visiting Singapore, don't miss trying the lor mee at Soon Lee Lor Mee on Circuit Road. With nearly 50 years of history, this spot has maintained its signature flavors.

Discover Soon Lee Lor Mee

One dish I can’t recommend enough when in Singapore is lor mee. Known for its thick gravy, traditional noodles, and various meats, this dish has become a staple in the culinary scene of the Lion City.

If you find yourself at the Circuit Road Hawker Centre near the Mattar MRT station, make sure to try Soon Lee Lor Mee. This stall has been a beloved fixture since the 70s and is often hailed as one of the best places for lor mee in Singapore.

A Glimpse of the Stall

At Soon Lee Lor Mee, you can choose from three sizes priced between 4 to 6 Singapore dollars. The fun part is that you can opt for either yellow noodles or rice noodles, or even mix both if you like!

I tried the smallest portion for 4 dollars and was delighted with a glossy bowl of noodles, delicious broth, a sliced boiled egg, some pork belly slices, and crispy bits. As I mixed the noodles, I discovered a generous amount of fresh bean sprouts hidden underneath.

About the Broth

The broth is the key element of this lor mee. Here, it seems a bit thinner compared to some other stalls, which might be a hit or miss for some. I found the broth at Soon Lee to be just right—not too thick, which keeps the dish from being overwhelming.

The broth is rich in savory flavors, with a hint of tanginess from vinegar that makes the dish even more enticing. The sweet and sour notes blend harmoniously. Each noodle is coated in a thick, flavorful broth that is chewy and pleasant to the palate.

Enjoying a Simple Menu

The pork belly served alongside is decent, though not outstanding, adding variety to the dish. The boiled egg is a must-have, enhancing the richness when paired with the noodles.

There are also some crispy bits in the bowl whose origin I’m not sure of, but they are delightfully crunchy with a slightly roasted flavor. I couldn’t resist these pieces, as their crunchiness contrasts beautifully with the soft texture of the noodles and meat.

Final Thoughts

Even though they serve only one dish, Soon Lee Lor Mee really excels at it. It’s no surprise that this stall has thrived for nearly 50 years with just lor mee on the menu. If you’re a food lover, you should definitely stop by! I found the 4-dollar portion a bit small, so if you have a bigger appetite, consider opting for the 5 or 6-dollar servings for a more satisfying meal.

Every time I’m near the Circuit Road Hawker Centre, I’ll definitely stop by for another bowl of lor mee. Fellow lor mee fans, don’t miss out on this gem when you get the chance!
