Discover the renowned Thai Seng Fish Soup with its long lines at Ubi, Singapore. Explore the flavors and must-try culinary experience this spot has to offer.

Discovering Thai Seng Fish Soup

When it comes to famous fish soup in Singapore, Thai Seng Fish Soup often tops the list. Recently, I had the chance to visit Ubi and stumbled upon this bustling eatery, always crowded with long waiting lines. This piqued my curiosity, and I knew I had to try this famous fish soup.

The Waiting Experience

Waiting over an hour to enjoy a dish isn’t an uncommon experience in Singapore, especially for Thai Seng Fish Soup. During that time, I observed fellow diners, noticing that the most popular choice on the menu was ee mian (crispy noodles) with an added egg in the soup.

When it was finally my turn, I decided to go for the Sliced Fish Ee Mian (S$5.50) with an egg (+S$0.50). This was the highlight of my meal. The fresh, tender fish combined perfectly with the crispy noodles and the warmth of the egg elevated each spoonful of soup to a whole new level.

Fresh and Flavorful

What sets Thai Seng Fish Soup apart is the freshness of the fish. The restaurant cuts the fish daily, ensuring they can serve their customers for the 4.5 hours they are open each day. Each bowl contains about six slices of soft, flavorful fish. For me, this is definitely one of the must-try fish soups!

Tom Yam Soup: The Perfect Combination

Another dish not to be missed is the Tom Yam Seafood Soup (S$7). With its signature spicy and sour flavor, this soup offers an exciting experience with a mix of various fresh seafood. The tangy and spicy notes make it hard to stop eating, but be careful, as the heat can be overwhelming for those not used to spice.

In fact, the Tom Yam Seafood Soup is best enjoyed with white rice, creating a perfect meal. However, it wasn’t as exceptional as I had hoped, but it remains a great option for anyone who loves Thai flavors.

Review of the Fried Dish

Lastly, I tried the Fried Fish Bee Hoon Soup (S$5.50). This dish comes with plenty of xiao bai cai (white cabbage), fried shallots, and crispy fried egg. Although I had high expectations, I found the dish to be rather average. The flavor felt a bit bland and lacked the ginger kick I typically enjoy in fish soup.

Conclusion: Is It Worth the Wait?

Thai Seng Fish Soup is like a hidden gem in Singapore’s culinary scene. The long lines tell their own story. While the dishes are carefully prepared, the wait may leave you slightly disappointed. The combination of ee mian and egg was the best part of my meal, along with the standout Tom Yam flavor. However, I’m not sure if the wait of over an hour was truly justified by the experience.

The eatery is open from 10 AM to 2:30 PM on weekdays (except Mondays). Since they don’t accept electronic payments, be sure to bring cash when you visit. Perhaps next time, I’ll return with one non-negotiable condition: no waiting in line!
