United Airlines has shocked many passengers by drastically reducing its business class benefits. These changes have left many travelers surprised and concerned.

United Airlines Reduces Business Class Benefits

This month, United Airlines has left many travelers reeling by cutting benefits for business class passengers. Those opting for lower fare tickets will now face additional fees for seat selection, lose the ability to change flight schedules, and will no longer have access to Polaris lounges. Instead, they will be directed to standard United clubs.

More notably, United has also restricted the accumulation of miles. Basic business class tickets and premium economy tickets will now be treated the same as basic economy tickets in terms of mileage accrual. If you don’t have a MileagePlus card or a United credit card, you won’t earn any miles.

Booking Business Class: Miles Lost

Basic business class tickets will no longer count towards MileagePlus status. These flights will only earn Premier Qualifying Points (PQP) but not Premier Qualifying Flights (PQF). Prince of Travel was the first to report on this limitation, and Executive Traveller has confirmed that United will treat basic business class tickets like basic economy tickets regarding mileage accrual.

Since April, United has eliminated mileage accrual for basic tickets for members without credit cards and has also reduced the earning rate to 3 miles per dollar on all economy tickets. This means that credit card holders will earn only 3 miles per dollar for basic tickets.

New Mileage Calculation

For passengers holding non-basic business class tickets, the mileage calculation has also changed. For standard business class tickets, mileage will be calculated based on the passenger's status:

✈️ Tìm chuyến bay giá tốt

  • Regular members: 3 miles/$
  • Silver members: 5 miles/$, with credit card 8 miles/$
  • Gold members: 6 miles/$, with credit card 9 miles/$
  • Platinum members: 7 miles/$, with credit card 10 miles/$
  • 1K members: 9 miles/$, with credit card 12 miles/$

With these changes, United has cut up to 40% of mileage benefits for basic members while only increasing by a maximum of 9% for credit card holders.

Paths to MileagePlus Status

To achieve MileagePlus status, United has two pathways: spending thresholds with PQD and a lower spending requirement with a minimum number of flights. Basic tickets will count towards a passenger's total spending for the year but will not count as a flown segment.

The current requirements for status are as follows:

  • Silver: $6,000 spending or $5,000 with 15 flights
  • Gold: $12,000 spending or $10,000 with 30 flights
  • Platinum: $18,000 spending or $15,000 with 45 flights
  • 1K: $28,000 spending or $22,000 with 60 flights

Are Other Airlines Complaining?

Currently, American Airlines and Delta (along with JetBlue, Alaska, etc.) are offering better value than United when purchasing the cheapest business class tickets. At this point, their prices do not come with the same restrictions as United's. Delta has indicated that they will introduce basic fare options for business and premium economy, but specific restrictions for these tickets have yet to be announced.

If Delta notices a shift in market share away from United in competitive markets like New York or Los Angeles, they may reconsider. If they gain an advantage through better value in their business class offerings, changing their policy would seem foolish.

Conclusion on Business Class Benefits

For travelers, choosing business class is not just about the price, but also the value that the airline provides. It’s not always easy to realize that airlines without similar restrictions might be the better choice. Simply comparing prices and schedules, travelers may find that United is not the ideal option compared to Delta or American, especially in terms of service and dining!
