Marriott has introduced a new electronic tipping feature in their app, sparking mixed reactions. What do you think about this development?

A Controversial Start

In 2025, Marriott announced the launch of a new feature in their mobile app, which is sure to provoke mixed reactions. I found myself torn between annoyance and acceptance, considering that if tipping is a necessity, simplifying the process could be beneficial. At the time, I wasn't clear on how this system would work until I had the chance to experience it firsthand.

My First Experience with the Feature

During my recent stay at a Marriott, I opened the app and noticed a button labeled "Tip Staff." Within the app, I discovered options to tip various departments such as front desk, housekeeping, dining service, drivers, maintenance, and more.

How It Works

When you select the department you want to tip, you need to enter your room number and the amount you wish to give. Payment is required immediately through Apple Pay or credit card, and you also have the option to include a processing fee for the tip. This fee can range from $0.46 for a $5 tip to $0.91 for a $20 tip.

Thoughts on Electronic Tipping

I feel conflicted about the ease of tipping. Clearly, by making tipping simpler, employers might shift the burden of labor costs onto customers. Will we eventually feel pressured to tip for services where tipping was previously not expected?

Addressing Real Needs

However, I also see the app-based tipping as a reasonable step forward in our digital age. Many hotels already have QR codes or envelopes in rooms for tipping housekeeping, so this is another way to facilitate that. There are hotel staff in the U.S. who often expect tips, so this seems positive for those who intend to tip.

The Challenges of Cash Tipping

I have also found it frustrating to tip with cash, as hotels often lack change. The front desk may not have change for a $20 bill, and the shuttle driver might not be able to break it either. So, while I don't oppose the concept (although I hope staff are paid more fairly), I find the execution here lacking.

Issues of Effectiveness

If you decide to tip someone, you usually want to tip a specific individual rather than an entire department; unfortunately, this system does not support that. In reality, the Marriott app simply directs you to a third party, and you must enter your credit card information immediately, which is less than ideal.

Final Thoughts

In summary, Marriott has rolled out the electronic tipping feature in their app, and it is operational at most locations in the U.S. and Canada. With this feature, customers can designate the department receiving the tip but cannot specify an individual recipient. You will need to enter payment information since all transactions will be processed separately from your bill.

Looking Ahead to the Future of Tipping

I’m not particularly thrilled about the premise this feature sets, especially the potential increase in the number of staff expecting tips in the future. However, it still seems necessary to find better ways to facilitate tipping in situations where guests wish to do so. Honestly, I feel disappointed with how this feature has been implemented, as it doesn't truly offer a solid solution.
