An unusual incident on a flight: A passenger brought raw eggs onboard and cracked them open, causing a hilarious yet chaotic situation for the flight attendants.

A Bizarre Incident on a Flight

I've witnessed many surprising situations on flights, but this one truly took me aback. A passenger brought raw eggs onto the plane and, for reasons unknown, proceeded to crack them open, splattering egg everywhere across the seats and cabin floor. Looking at the dozens of broken eggs on the floor, I couldn't help but imagine the unpleasant smell that would permeate the cabin after an hour of being cooped up in the air.

When Passengers Indulge in the Unusual

This incident didn’t occur on just any airline I often hear about; it happened in China. Here, some passengers even throw coins into the airplane engines for good luck, even though this is clearly extremely dangerous and detrimental to the aircraft.

The Unpleasant Odor

Seeing those broken eggs, I felt like they were cracked inside the cabin of an Airbus from China Southern Airlines. Interestingly, bringing raw eggs onto a plane is actually permitted. In the U.S., the TSA states that fresh eggs can be carried in both carry-on and checked luggage.

Luggage Regulations

However, if this was with China Southern, their regulations recommend that fragile and perishable items should not be checked in but brought into the cabin instead. I also noted that while the smell issue is real, the cabin air is refreshed every 2-3 minutes, which means it gets circulated about 20-30 times an hour, so the air isn’t as stuffy as one might think.

Similar Stories

In fact, in the U.S., I've seen passengers cracking eggs on planes to make pasta right at their dining tables. There was another case where a passenger left perishable food in the overhead compartment, leading to maggots falling onto another passenger during a Delta flight. It’s hard to understand how someone could leave such a mess for the flight attendants and cleaning crew.

A Reminder from Flight Attendants

One flight attendant from Southwest even announced that the flight would not depart until everyone tidied up. This should ideally be enforced, but such delays can be costly for airlines, so often, no one follows through on that threat.

Dealing with Unpleasant Odors

If the smell from another passenger's food becomes unbearable, such as someone opening a can of tuna or munching on raw onions onboard, the best solution is to use coffee grounds from the galley. The smell of coffee can help neutralize unpleasant odors, making the cabin air more pleasant.
