Experience the economy class on the SWISS A330 with excellent food, but a few issues made the journey quite exhausting.

Starting the Journey from Switzerland to the USA

We just wrapped up a 9.5-hour flight from Switzerland to the USA on the SWISS A330 in economy class. While the food served on the flight was delightful, several other issues made the experience less than perfect.

Initial Impressions of SWISS A330 Economy Class

Initially, I had planned to make a stop in Copenhagen before heading home. However, due to personal reasons in Germany, I had to cancel that part of my journey. Stuck with fully booked domestic flights in Europe during the Easter holiday season, buying a new ticket from Zurich to Copenhagen cost as much as a one-way ticket from Zurich to Chicago.

Although I truly enjoy flying in SAS business class, I opted to fly SWISS economy to evaluate a product I hadn’t tried in five years. Plus, I wanted to preserve my SAS miles for future trips.

Kickstarting the Flight in Zurich

Despite my many flying experiences, I still love the SWISS lounges in Zurich, especially the one at Gate E. Here, we enjoyed a delicious lunch before departure while watching the big planes take off. Our flight to Chicago was operated by an Airbus A330-300. While I had previously flown first and business class on this model, this was my first time in economy.

Experience in Economy Class

We were seated in the rear economy section of the aircraft. I purchased a basic economy ticket, so the system automatically assigned our seats during check-in. The A330 has a seating configuration of 2-4-2 (except for the last few rows), and we were assigned to a four-seat area with a stranger in one of the aisles.

The flight departed with every seat occupied. This 9-hour journey was indeed a challenging experience, especially since the Wi-Fi connection was not functioning well (I had paid for the Wi-Fi package but experienced intermittent service).

Seat Standards and In-Flight Service

The seats were not overly uncomfortable, but legroom was tight, and the reclining seats made it challenging to work on my laptop. Additionally, the cabin felt warm, and there was no personal ventilation – a common issue on SWISS flights.

Exquisite In-Flight Cuisine

When it comes to food, we were genuinely pleased. The lunch began with small cheese bites (the same type served in business class), which were delicious. The main course offered a choice of pasta or chicken in cream sauce with mashed potatoes and green beans, all of which were delightful. The fresh lentil salad and bread were also of high quality. I would rate this meal a perfect 10 out of 10!

Both the coffee and pastries served were excellent, complete with a “real” service kit. Mid-flight, we were even treated to Mövenpick chocolate ice cream, which was a wonderful bonus.

Overall Flight Assessment

Two hours before landing, a second snack was served, featuring delicious bread and a fantastic bulgur salad. I truly enjoyed the food on this flight. The staff was very attentive, continuously checking on drinks and being very polite.

However, we encountered headwinds and arrived in Chicago about 30 minutes late. Overall, the in-flight service was excellent, and the meals were of high quality, living up to Swiss standards.

Conclusion

While the seats were not terrible, the legroom was cramped, and the reclining seats in daylight made working nearly impossible. The cabin was also quite warm. Still, would I fly SWISS economy class again? Absolutely. Overall, this flight was still a valuable experience.

Useful Information for Vietnamese Travelers

If you plan to experience flying with SWISS, note that obtaining a Schengen visa is mandatory for entry into Switzerland. To fly from Vietnam, you can depart from Tan Son Nhat Airport (SGN) or Noi Bai Airport (HAN) with ticket prices starting around 15 million VND, depending on the travel period. Be well-prepared for your trip to have some exciting experiences!
