My Experience Flying Business Class on an American Airlines A321XLR from JFK to LAX

Not long ago, I had the chance to fly for the first time on American Airlines' A321XLR in Premium Economy. This time around, I decided to return and experience Business Class on this sleek new aircraft. Verdict: The Flagship Suite seats are stunning, but there are still areas that need improvement, and the service wasn’t as consistent as I had hoped.

Flight Details

American Airlines flight AA 341 departed on Saturday, January 17, 2026, from John F. Kennedy International Airport (JFK) at 3:57 PM, arriving at Los Angeles International Airport (LAX) at 6:57 PM. The total flight time was 6 hours, with seats 3A and 3F on the Airbus A321XLR.

Check-In and Boarding Process

I checked in at Dallas Fort Worth Airport (DFW) early in the morning. Upon arriving at JFK, my son and I headed straight to the lounge. There was a small hiccup here: the boarding passes for Business Class showed “First Class,” even though it was actually “Flagship Business.” So, I decided to try my luck at the Chelsea Lounge, but we were turned away and directed to the Greenwich Lounge next door instead.

Business Class Seat Design

The Business Class section on the A321XLR features 20 herringbone seats from Collins Aerospace, arranged in a 1×1 configuration. At first glance, the aisle felt a bit narrow due to the seat design taking up more space. However, with fewer seats available, boarding was much quicker. Surprisingly, the seats are angled toward the aisle, which creates a sense of privacy that I hadn’t anticipated.

Interior and Seat Space

In the Business area, there’s an attractive “Flagship” sign on the wall. The seats are 21 inches wide and can convert into a flat bed. While the seats might seem a bit cramped at first, I found them quite comfortable whether sitting upright, relaxing, or lying down.

In-Flight Amenities

Each seat comes with a personal amenity kit from Raven + Lily, filled with everything from a toothbrush set and earplugs to socks, lip balm, and moisturizer. However, the storage space in the seat is a significant drawback. There’s a small shelf, but it’s not sufficient for all personal items, so everything else has to go in the overhead bin.

In-Flight Experience

I really enjoyed the interior lighting and the overall spacious feel. Although there are no doors for the seating area, privacy was still maintained. I managed to catch about an hour and a half of sleep and found the seat quite comfortable for a long flight.

Service Quality

Unfortunately, the service on this flight was somewhat inconsistent. It was disappointing to see the quality of service fall short of expectations, especially when it came to food and drink service.

Conclusion

The flight from JFK to LAX in American Airlines' A321XLR Business Class provided an enjoyable experience, but there are definitely areas for improvement. Nevertheless, it’s a significant step up from previous aircraft. Overall, I was satisfied with the experience, but I hope to see enhancements in the future.
