Experience Life with the Nomadic Reindeer Herdsmen in Mongolia

In 2026, I had the incredible opportunity to embark on a unique expedition to Mongolia, where I would live alongside the nomadic Tsaatan reindeer herders. Each morning, the Tsaatan family starts their day early, with the wife usually rising first to light the fire and brew tea. Soon after, the husband gets up to check on the reindeer herd.

After breakfast, if it's milking season, they begin the daily task of milking the reindeer. Together, they engage in various chores like packing supplies, chopping wood, or transforming reindeer hides into products such as saddles, harnesses, and belts. The women typically sew clothing and make cheese and yogurt, while the men repair equipment like sleds and hunting rifles.

The Life of the Tsaatan People

The Tsaatan, also known as Dukha, reside in the taiga region of northern Mongolia, where dense pine forests touch the Siberian border. In the summer, they often move up to higher mountains to escape the heat, as reindeer cannot sweat like we do. Conversely, during winter, they tend to stay closer to settlements to facilitate their children's schooling.

This Mongolian expedition allowed me to live with the Tsaatan for three days, participating in their daily activities such as milking, herding reindeer, gathering firewood, fetching water, and even singing traditional songs together. It was truly a rare opportunity to gain deeper insight into their simple, nature-connected lifestyle.

Life in Harmony with Nature

The Tsaatan maintain a sustainable lifestyle, not only raising reindeer but also respecting their surrounding environment. According to Timur Yadamsuren, the leader of this journey, the nomadic philosophy is quite simple: "Do not touch the earth." The land is seen as a sacred temple, only animals are allowed to tread upon it, and they earn their livelihood through these creatures.

This perspective made me appreciate their way of life even more, as they remain untouched by logging activities or the noisy tourism prevalent in other areas. Meanwhile, at popular tourist spots near Lake Khovsgol, some groups exploit reindeer for photo opportunities, which is not only inauthentic but harmful to the animals.

The Modern Life of the Tsaatan

Despite the rapid advancement of technology and globalization, the Tsaatan people have managed to preserve their cultural identity. The Mongolian government provides them with monthly support to encourage the maintenance of their traditional lifestyle. They also make use of modern conveniences such as satellite antennas, solar panels, cars, and even online banking to ease their daily lives.

Timur mentioned that the Tsaatan are relatively unaffected by climate change, as their land is located in a high mountainous region with no logging activities. Everything here remains pristine and undisturbed, except for a few border patrol teams.

Days Spent with the Tsaatan

During my three days living with the Tsaatan, I not only learned how to live in harmony with nature but also felt the peace and simplicity of their lifestyle. They were incredibly hospitable, often preparing meals for me, primarily consisting of beef, homemade bread, and fresh vegetables.

Their way of life serves as a lesson in the connection between humanity and nature. These days provided a perfect opportunity for me to rediscover tranquility and experience a life untainted by the hustle and bustle of city living.
