Discovering Granada

Nicaragua has always been on my travel bucket list, and Granada stands out as a must-visit destination. This charming old city captivated me with its vibrant architecture and neatly paved streets lined with cozy cafes and lively bars. However, what surprised me even more was discovering a tropical archipelago just 20 minutes away, boasting 365 islands teeming with wildlife and pristine beaches.

The Isletas de Granada

My hostel host recommended the Isletas, a favorite spot among locals that often goes unnoticed by tourists. Formed from the eruption of the Mombacho volcano, each island represents a day of the year. Intrigued by the Isletas de Granada, I decided to include this adventure in my trip.

Getting to the Islands

Reaching these islands is surprisingly straightforward. A simple boat ride is all it takes! Initially, I made the mistake of heading to Marina Cocibolca, where private boat tour prices were quite steep. Eventually, I discovered the public boat dock at the beach near Santa Cruz, which only cost about $10-15 per person and allowed for a 2-3 hour exploration.

Experiencing the Isletas

Within just a few minutes of floating on the water, I felt like I had escaped Granada completely. The weather was perfect, and the sea was as smooth as glass, reflecting the palm trees and glimmering sunlight. Our guide, fluent in both English and Spanish, enriched my understanding of the sights we encountered.

Wildlife Encounters

One of our first stops was Monkey Island, home to a friendly family of spider monkeys and capuchins. I captured some unforgettable photos as they leaped from tree to tree, posing for the camera. The guide pointed out various bird species, from parrots to herons, and even warned us about crocodiles lurking in the swamps, which added a thrilling edge to the experience.

Island Life

What struck me most was the stark contrast between the lives of the islanders. On one side, there were the dilapidated wooden shacks of fishermen, while on the other, luxurious villas belonging to local artists and high-end resorts stood proudly. Despite the clear differences, I felt a deep connection to the local culture as I observed the simple way of life that has persisted through generations.

A Unique Atmosphere

Honestly, I didn't expect this trip to be so enriching. Although I had taken boat tours to islands before, this journey felt truly unique, blending nature with local charm. Immersing myself in this beautiful setting was a thrill I won’t soon forget.

Where to Stay

If I get the chance to return, I would definitely choose to stay at one of the lodges on the islands. Though they tend to be a bit pricier than accommodations in Granada, the experience would be priceless. Some enticing options like Isleta El Espino Ecolodge or Jicaro Island Lodge promise wonderful nature-filled getaways.

Local Cuisine

I can't forget to mention the delightful local cuisine. The island restaurants, with their rich offerings, completely won me over. I savored fresh seafood while enjoying the breathtaking natural scenery surrounding me—what could be better?
