Disappointment in the Tropical Wilderness

Sitting in my hillside room in Costa Rica, I felt like I had everything as I gazed out at the volcanoes shrouded in misty forests. However, that feeling quickly faded when I realized I hadn't spotted the vibrant quetzal bird. My trip in April, which was supposed to be the prime time to encounter the quetzal between the Juan Castro Blanco and Poás Volcano National Parks, didn’t yield the results I had hoped for. I woke up at dawn and joined a group expedition to find the bird, but it remained elusive.

Unexpected Discoveries

But soon enough, Costa Rica surprised me with other delightful treasures. That night, while walking through the forest, I encountered dozens of frogs, some so translucent that I could see their internal organs. We also spotted two yellow-billed toucans when our van driver decided to turn back just in time for us to snap a few photos. The highlight of the evening was finding a three-toed sloth peacefully snoozing in a guanacaste tree at Manuel Antonio National Park.

Understanding Success and Failure

I realized that not seeing the quetzal made the other moments feel even more special. That initial disappointment heightened my excitement when I encountered other species. As psychologist Dr. Adrian Banks explains, the feeling of success often becomes clearer after experiencing failure. I found this to be true not only on this trip but also during my other wildlife photography adventures.

A Mindset of Acceptance

Gradually, I learned to view failure not just as a part of the journey but as a valuable experience. Even after searching tirelessly, I understood that savoring the process made the outcome all the sweeter and turned the trip into a true reward.

Life Lessons

This perspective has also influenced other aspects of my life. Whether it’s dealing with the weather's impact on my photos, navigating freelance work, or even in dating, cultivating gratitude and not taking success for granted has helped me maintain lasting joy.

Words of Wisdom from Einstein

Though I didn’t encounter the quetzal, I remind myself of Albert Einstein’s words: “Failure is success in progress.” That’s a mantra I’ll carry with me until the day I finally see a quetzal in real life.
