Mickey Mantle's Little House

One afternoon, I found myself stopping in Commerce, Oklahoma, with my 11-year-old son. This small town, home to about 2,400 residents, might not impress many at first glance. However, for me, it holds a special significance as the birthplace of Mickey Mantle, one of baseball's greatest players. Standing in front of the small house at 319 South Quincy Street, I shared the fairy tale-like story of his life with my son.

Mickey's father, Mutt, believed in his son's talent even before he was born. Every day after work, he would train Mickey alongside his grandfather. This house was the "workshop" that produced a legendary switch-hitter. You might be surprised to know that Mickey once said he was the only kid in town who never got scolded for breaking a window.

The Journey to Picher: A Toxic Town

After leaving Mickey's house, we continued our journey to Picher, a town just a few miles away that I knew wouldn't offer a cheerful atmosphere. On Atlas Obscura, it's known for its mountains of toxic waste from lead and zinc mining.

As I livestreamed our trip, someone from Oklahoma asked why we were visiting this place, where every house was abandoned and doors and windows bore the ominous words "NO ENTRY." By 2009, the government had to evacuate all residents due to pollution and the dangers posed by the underground mines.

Connecting the Two Places

As I sat down to write about Mickey's house, I delved deeper into his family's history. It turns out that both Mickey's grandfather and father died from Hodgkin's disease, possibly due to inhaling lead and zinc dust from the mines. Tragically, the mine continued to operate for 15 years after Mickey’s father passed away, and it wasn't until 1983 that it was declared a hazardous area.

Visitors who come to Mickey's home in Commerce often skip Picher. They arrive seeking the American Dream, unaware that the fuller story lies in Picher, where Mickey's father returned home from grueling work each day. My son felt the sadness of Mickey’s father's story, and so did I.

Understanding the Wonders and Harsh Realities

What I realized from this journey is that wonder isn't solely found in beautiful things. Sometimes, it resides in the heart-wrenching truths we uncover. These two seemingly opposing places on the map share a silent, profound story.
