Uber is testing a new car rental service that allows users to skip the counter and receive their vehicles at their location. Could this change the way we rent cars?
Uber's Innovative Car Rental Model
Recently, Uber introduced a new car rental service called 'Uber Rent,' which enables users to book a vehicle directly through the app without needing to visit a counter or take a shuttle. Instead, the car is delivered right to your location. This smart approach saves users both time and effort.
Comparing to Traditional Rental Companies
Many traditional rental companies like Avis and Hertz offer premium services for loyal customers, such as Avis's Chairmans Club and Hertz's Platinum program. However, their processes can often be complicated, requiring users to navigate through multiple steps to complete their rental.
In contrast, Uber's new model aims to simplify this process. With just a few taps on the app, you can select a car, enter payment information, and a third-party driver will bring the vehicle to you.
Requirements for Renters
To use this service, renters must be at least 25 years old and must book their car at least two hours in advance. Unfortunately, the airport delivery service is often not available, which is a significant drawback for those needing a car upon arrival.
Drivers will see delivery opportunities in their app, including pickup and drop-off information before deciding to accept the ride. However, one of the major issues Uber faces is the lack of shuttle service to or from the rental locations, which can be inconvenient for renters.

Service Status in Various Cities
This service is currently being tested in several major cities, including Phoenix, San Francisco, Los Angeles, Miami, and more. Drivers often express dissatisfaction with having to return to their vehicles without passengers, and the income can be low when factoring in waiting time and travel costs.
While renters appreciate the convenience of having a car delivered without needing to queue or wait, some feedback indicates issues with delivery timing and customer support responses.
Pricing and Service Value
Basic rental rates typically range from $60 to $70 a day in Austin, depending on the vehicle type and demand. However, during peak times, prices can soar to hundreds of dollars per day. Still, this service can provide significant value for those who don’t require a car every day.
However, if Uber cannot guarantee timely vehicle delivery, waiting can diminish the service's value. Especially since Uber seems unprepared to price the service in a way that offers fair compensation to drivers, considering the challenges and costs they face.
Market Opportunities for Premium Car Rentals
Recently, I've sensed a gap in the market for a premium car rental product that addresses issues like waiting times or hauling luggage from the airport. Uber may recognize this opportunity but hasn't fully capitalized on it, partly because they are applying their current product to the outdated models of companies like Avis.
Meanwhile, products like Silvercar have not lasted long, partly because they also don't focus on airport services, and their customer pickup processes are quite complex. Nevertheless, there are still plenty of opportunities for someone to step in and improve this situation.
