United Airlines Introduces New Fare: Basic Business Class with Limitations

The concept of basic economy tickets has been well-established in the U.S. for some time now, and major airlines are now looking to apply this model to business class as well.

Recently, United Airlines announced its plans to roll out a tiered fare system that includes options for basic business class. The goal is to make it easier for passengers to find a flying experience that aligns with their preferences.

Specifically, United will offer three fare options for business class: basic, standard, and flexible. These options will be available on numerous flights, ranging from long-haul international routes to domestic flights and some journeys to Hawaii. This change is expected to begin in April 2026 in certain markets, with plans for expansion in the coming year.

So, what limitations will apply to these basic business class tickets? Passengers booking basic fares in the Polaris business class will need to:

  • Pay a fee to select their seat (previously, this was free).

  • Be allowed only one free checked bag (down from two).

  • Access United Club but not the Polaris Lounge.

  • Not be allowed to change or refund their tickets (standard tickets allow changes, while flexible tickets permit refunds).

  • Be ineligible for paid upgrades to Polaris Studio.

These restrictions will also be similar for Premium Plus economy tickets. Passengers will have to pay to select seats, face limitations on checked baggage, and will not be eligible for upgrades or ticket flexibility.

I predict that by the end of 2026, we will see these basic business class tickets offered by all major airlines in the U.S. Interestingly, this announcement comes right after United revised its mileage accumulation method, now solely based on whether you hold a United credit card.

It's also worth noting that access to the Polaris Lounge is undergoing changes. United has announced that the business class cabin on transcontinental flights will soon be marketed as Polaris, meaning passengers on those flights will gain access to the Polaris Lounge.

Will customers genuinely benefit from basic business class tickets? Recently, we’ve seen the basic economy ticket concept gain popularity, with fewer perks for the cheapest tickets. The intention behind this is to broaden the potential customer base for airlines and encourage existing customers to "upgrade" to higher-priced tickets to avoid the restrictions.

Basic business class tickets are also marketed as beneficial for customers, offering them more choices and allowing them to pay only for the services they desire. However, in practice, the reality of these tickets often falls short. I don’t believe that basic business class tickets will be significantly cheaper than the current business class fares.

Instead, I suspect that the current lowest fares will become the basic tickets, aimed at encouraging people to purchase more expensive options. Meanwhile, demand for premium travel remains strong, but business travel has yet to fully recover. Leisure travelers are often willing to spend more on business class, but not everyone is ready to shell out over $10,000 like some corporate clients did in the past.

Thus, it’s not surprising that airlines are employing every strategy possible to encourage customers to spend more on business class. One thing to remember is that adding basic business class fares to long-haul markets requires more coordination due to the joint ventures major airlines are involved in.

I expect to see these fares pop up among Star Alliance's transatlantic joint venture partners in the near future.

In summary, for a long time, United executives have hinted that the introduction of basic business class fares would be imminent. Now, it’s official—United is launching new fare classes for all cabins, and the idea is that we will see basic business class tickets. In the case of the new Polaris business class fares, they will only allow seat selection for a fee, have baggage restrictions, do not permit changes or refunds, and only offer access to United Club instead of the Polaris Lounge.

Make no mistake, this is a way to generate more revenue, and I view this as a price increase if you want the same level of service as before, rather than a discount opportunity. Stay tuned to see if Delta and American follow suit in the very near future.
