United Airlines Increases Baggage Fees

United Airlines has just announced an increase in checked baggage fees by $10, effective Friday, April 3rd. This means that passengers will need to pay this additional fee when checking bags on most flights.

Details of the Fee Increase

The standard checked baggage fee for domestic flights within the U.S., Mexico, Canada, and Latin America will rise to $50. However, passengers who pay for their baggage at least 24 hours before their departure will receive a $5 discount, bringing the fee down to $45.

Additionally, the fee for a second checked bag will also see an increase of $10, resulting in a new fee of $60, or $55 if passengers opt for the advance payment option.

Are Other Airlines Following Suit?

United Airlines is the second U.S. airline to raise checked baggage fees this week. With rising fuel prices due to global oil costs, many airlines are beginning to implement fuel surcharges into their ticket prices as well.

JetBlue Leads the Charge

JetBlue was the first airline to increase baggage fees before United. The fact that one of the three largest airlines in the U.S. has raised its fees could likely prompt other airlines to follow suit.

How to Avoid Baggage Fees

Fortunately, there are still ways to check your baggage for free on United. The airline offers complimentary baggage services for MileagePlus members who have achieved Elite status and hold qualifying co-branded credit cards.

Changes to the Loyalty Program

This fee increase coincides with United Airlines announcing a series of changes to its loyalty program, aimed at helping credit card holders earn more miles than before, although this also means that other passengers will earn fewer miles.
