United Airlines Announces Increased Baggage Fees
This week, United Airlines stirred up quite a buzz with its announcement of increased baggage fees. Following in the footsteps of JetBlue, which was the first to implement such hikes, United is now joining the trend seen across the domestic airline industry.
The new baggage fees at United will see an increase ranging from $10 to $50, depending on the number of bags checked. Starting today, passengers will need to pay $10 for their first and second checked bags, while the fee for the third bag and beyond will soar to $50.
The Current State of the Airline Industry
Airlines are grappling with numerous challenges, particularly the mounting pressure from soaring fuel prices. If oil prices do not decline, even the most profitable airlines may find themselves in hot water. Many previously profitable carriers are now at risk of bankruptcy.
For tickets purchased from today (Friday, April 3, 2026), passengers who do not prepay for their baggage 24 hours in advance will see the fee for the first bag jump to $50 (up from $40), $60 for the second bag, and a staggering $200 for the third.

Raising Fees Instead of Ticket Prices
Executives from various airlines have warned that ticket prices might increase due to high fuel costs, but the reality is that demand for air travel is very price-sensitive. When ticket prices rise, many travelers will seek alternative options.
If airlines could simply raise ticket prices, they wouldn't be facing such financial losses. Therefore, increasing baggage fees is seen as a reasonable way to boost revenue since passengers tend not to scrutinize baggage fees as closely as they do ticket prices.
Doubled Baggage Fees
In total, United has just increased its baggage fees by $10 to $50 per flight. The airline is also encouraging passengers to pay in advance by offering a $5 discount for those who settle their fees more than 24 hours before their flight.
Airlines have realized that increasing baggage fees is the easiest way to enhance revenue without raising ticket prices. JetBlue started this wave, and it's certain that many other airlines will follow suit.
Keep an Eye on Costs
It’s worth noting that once costs rise, they rarely come back down. Therefore, monitoring and planning for your trip is essential. What do you think about United’s decision to raise baggage fees this time? Feel free to share your thoughts!
