Aluminum luggage always exudes a sense of luxury, much like a classic little black dress, a perfect white t-shirt, or a pair of quality jeans. Investing in an aluminum suitcase is a smart move that never goes out of style. With its glossy finish, it stands out amidst the sea of identical black bags on the baggage carousel.

While many suitcases can accompany you on your travels, none combine durability and elegance quite like this one. Recently, Carl Friedrik, one of my favorite luggage brands, launched a stunning aluminum carry-on suitcase, showcasing a sparkling silver exterior.

Design and Pricing

This suitcase features the brand's signature striped design, an ultra-secure double-lock system, reinforced steel corners, leather accents, and smooth 360-degree wheels. However, the price tag for this beauty is not cheap—$845. Compared to competitors like Tumi ($1,395) and Rimowa ($1,525), it’s a more competitive price, but still $200 more than Carl Friedrik's previous Hybrid model.

Having used Carl Friedrik luggage on numerous trips, I was eager to see if this aluminum suitcase lived up to the hype. To find out, I took this new suitcase on two trips—to Paris and Milan.

First Impressions of the Suitcase

Aesthetically, this suitcase is truly stunning. It has a classic charm, reminiscent of the golden age of travel, with its stylish striped design. It’s no surprise that the Roy family from the series "Succession" chooses this brand when traveling by helicopter.

The wheels glide effortlessly, and the leather-wrapped handle provides a sturdy grip, making it easy to maneuver into the overhead compartment on the plane. However, compared to the Hybrid model, this aluminum suitcase has a capacity of 38 liters, while the Hybrid offers 41 liters. If you prefer to travel light—even on long flights—this difference might be a drawback.

Material and Durability

Constructed from anodized aluminum, this suitcase boasts exceptional durability, featuring steel rivets for added protection. The material develops a unique patina over time, giving the suitcase a character of its own. After two trial trips, I noticed a few dents on the surface. If you’re not a fan of this, you might want to consider a polycarbonate suitcase instead.

Storage Space and Features

In terms of interior space, I was able to pack everything I needed for a three-night stay in Milan and Paris, including a few outfits, pajamas, and shoes. While the capacity is somewhat limited compared to the Hybrid, it’s still quite suitable for long weekend getaways. Inside, there’s a zippered compartment and a section with sturdy compression straps to keep your belongings secure.

The dual plastic locks are also a nice touch. They come with TSA approval and feel very solid. I prefer this type of lock over zippers, as it gives me more confidence when the suitcase is packed full.

Final Thoughts on the Aluminum Suitcase

With experience using over 100 different suitcases, I can confidently say that this aluminum one truly stands out. It’s beautiful and feels luxurious in a five-star hotel setting. While its features may not exceed those of cheaper suitcases, the design is certainly worth the investment. With a reasonable price for an aluminum suitcase and a lifetime warranty, this is a must-have if you’re searching for a durable product from a London-based brand.
