A Visit to Beauty World

I often find myself at Beauty World, drawn by the delicious food, especially the eateries along Chun Tin Road. When I heard about a newly opened fried chicken spot named Xiang Xiang Ji at the Beauty World Food Centre, I couldn’t resist the temptation to check it out right away.

Xiang Xiang Ji is located at the back of Beauty World, boasting a bright orange sign and a large chicken icon that catches the eye of anyone passing by. Upon entering, I was greeted with a wide array of options, ranging from the Combi Set (S$9.90 for rice, S$10.90 for fries) to the Chicken Leg Bites Set (S$9.90 for rice, S$10.90 for fries).

What to Order at Xiang Xiang Ji?

Upon arrival, I was a bit overwhelmed by the variety available. After some suggestions from the staff, I decided to try the Chicken Boneless Set (S$10.80) and the Triple Wings Set (S$9.90). I had to wait a little longer for the Triple Wings Set, as everything is freshly fried to order, ensuring it’s served hot rather than pre-fried and left to cool.

I also opted for Xiang Xiang Chicken Rice to accompany the Chicken Boneless Leg Set, which included a drink and a choice of sauce. I went for the cheese sauce to add a little extra flavor.

Special Fried Chicken from Family Recipes

While I waited, the owner shared with me that they have a special guideline for their central kitchen on how to marinate the chicken before it’s brought to Xiang Xiang Ji for frying. What’s particularly special is that the chicken here is considered a heritage dish, as the recipe has been passed down from the owner’s grandmother.

One surprising detail is that they don’t use regular white rice; instead, they serve short-grain rice that is seasoned to enhance its aroma and taste.

Exploring the Triple Wings Set

Next, I dove into the Triple Wings Set, which I paired with fries and spicy mayo sauce. The wings here are noticeably larger than typical wings and incredibly crispy. Although I’m not a huge fan of wings (why pay for the bones?), my companions thoroughly enjoyed the sweet and tender meat with its crunchy exterior.

The chicken inside remained juicy and flavorful. The sauces I dipped my fries in were the cheese sauce and the spicy mayo. The owner mentioned that the spicy mayo is made from scratch using her mother-in-law’s recipe, blending various spices to create a unique flavor.

Who is Xiang Xiang Ji For?

Xiang Xiang Ji is truly an ideal spot for anyone craving fried chicken without the heaviness of greasy food. The combo sets are perfect for students or anyone looking to save some money. Additionally, it’s a great place for those wanting to try authentic heritage fried chicken.

How to Get to Xiang Xiang Ji?

Xiang Xiang Ji is located on Upper Bukit Timah Road. The nearest MRT station is Beauty World (DT5), and you should take Exit A for the shortest route. Alternatively, you can take a bus and get off at the stop: Beauty World Stn Exit A.

Would I Recommend Xiang Xiang Ji?

Absolutely! Even though the owner is relatively new to the F&B scene, they serve high-quality chicken at affordable prices. The large, tender pieces of chicken are perfect for a satisfying meal for fried chicken lovers. Moreover, the owner is very friendly and welcoming, so make sure to stop by and enjoy this trending fried chicken spot!
