This is not just an aesthetic loss; it is also a loss of a part of our culture, and children who could become scientists may lose the spark of passion ignited by a night sky view.\" Worldwide, there are 23 international dark sky reserves, seven of which are located in England. 1. Exmoor National Park

The sky at Exmoor is regarded as one of the darkest spots in England, with very low light pollution allowing visitors to see the Milky Way and thousands of stars with the naked eye on clear nights. It’s no wonder Exmoor National Park was the first dark sky reserve designated in Europe. This area was once a retreat for famous poets Samuel Taylor Coleridge and William Wordsworth, who secretly left small white stones as markers to find their way back.

Many campsites and lodges in Exmoor are dark sky-friendly, and numerous attractions are designed for stargazing. Today, the Exmoor National Park team rents out all the necessary equipment for sky observation, including telescopes. They also host the Dark Sky Festival every October/November with exciting activities ranging from guided stargazing sessions, night walks, to presentations and workshops conducted by professional astronomers.

Tip from Tiffany: Wimbleball Lake, located 15 minutes northeast of Dulverton, is the perfect spot to see red deer, long-eared bats, and flocks of starlings at dusk as the stars begin to appear.

2. Brecon Beacons National Park

Brecon Beacons is a mountain range famous for its Bronze Age burial mounds, Norman castles, and sheep trails. This area is popular for various outdoor activities such as cycling, kayaking, horseback riding, surfing, and climbing. An increasing number of visitors come here for stargazing. Brecon Beacons National Park became the fifth international dark sky reserve in the world in 2013 and has since become a favorite destination for both amateur and professional astronomers.

On clear nights, you can see the Milky Way, major constellations, bright nebulae, and even meteor showers. Many local accommodation providers offer “stay and stargaze” packages, and the stunning scenery here has resulted in impressive astrophotography.

Tip from Tiffany: The beautiful ruins of Llanthony Priory are one of the most iconic spots in the park, where visitors can enjoy the clear dark sky. Although the monastery closes at 4 PM, stargazers are welcome to use the parking lot to gaze towards Hatterrall Hill.

3. Cranborne Chase Area

Cranborne Chase, straddling Wiltshire, Dorset, Hampshire, and Somerset, is a unique and diverse area rich in rare flora and fauna. Fans of author Thomas Hardy may recognize this place from the opening scenes of his novel Tess of the d’Urbervilles. Cranborne Chase was recognized as the 14th international dark sky reserve in the world in October 2019. Over 50% of the area has the lowest light pollution levels in England.

The hilly landscape of Cranborne Chase offers stunning vistas and impressive views of the night sky, including prominent peaks like Breeze Hill (262m), Win Green (277m), and Melbury Hill (263m). Stargazing events are held throughout the year, culminating in the annual Dark Sky Festival in April.

4. Snowdonia National Park

The night sky is frequently referenced in the Mabinogion tales of Wales, a collection of stories written in Middle Welsh originating from ancient oral traditions. Thus, it makes sense that in December 2015, Snowdonia National Park became the second area in Wales designated as an international dark sky reserve. The designated area covers 18% of Wales.

Snowdonia is one of the darkest places in England, especially in its pristine mountainous regions, covering approximately 2,070 km2 (800 square miles) with a sparse population. Whether you are in the mountains, by a lake, or looking out to sea, a clear night in Snowdonia will immerse you in the Milky Way, all the major constellations from Orion to the Pleiades, nebulae, and shooting stars.
