Air New Zealand introduces the Economy Skynest, a new sleeping space for economy class passengers, promising a more comfortable sleep experience on long-haul flights.
Overview of Air New Zealand's New In-Flight Experience
For decades, having the ability to lie flat on a plane has been one of the key differentiators between first class and economy class seats. Typically, this means you have to spend thousands of dollars for an upgrade or fly with a few rare airlines that offer the option to buy an entire row of seats in economy—currently limited to Air New Zealand and soon to be United Airlines.
Air New Zealand was the first to introduce the "SkyCouch" in 2011, allowing passengers to pay extra for a row of seats that could convert into a bed. Recently, the airline announced a new version that focuses more on sleep, called the "Economy Skynest." The best part? Its pricing is actually within reach for economy class travelers.
Details About the Economy Skynest
Unlike the SkyCouch, the Economy Skynest isn’t simply a modification of economy class seating. It is a distinct area of the aircraft featuring dedicated sleeping pods for economy passengers. The Skynest experience is expected to open for bookings in May 2026 for flights departing later that year between New York and Auckland, one of the world’s longest commercial routes.
The sleeping pods will be arranged in a bunk bed style between the economy and business class cabins. Instead of having to book a pod for the entire flight, passengers can reserve the Skynest in four-hour time blocks, choosing their own times to leave their seat and climb into their pod. Notably, all Skynest users will operate simultaneously, so you won’t have to worry about someone else entering while you’re asleep.
Amenities and Pricing
Service frequency will be arranged around meal times, and passengers will receive notifications on the screen behind their seat as their sleep session approaches. The crew will refresh each Skynest pod between uses, and each pod will be equipped with a long mattress, clean bedding, ambient lighting, ventilation, and charging ports, along with a curtain for privacy. However, there will be no entertainment screens in these pods, and headphones will be required for anyone wanting to use the in-flight screen or listen to music.

The price for the Skynest experience starts at $495 (approximately 11 million VND) and includes a set of amenities such as an eye mask, earplugs, socks, and some basic health care items.
Comparison with Traditional Flat Seats
Theoretically, Skynest provides something familiar: a flat bed. However, in reality, this is an entirely new concept. Traditional flat seats, whether in first class or the concept of flat beds in economy, are part of the assigned seating. In first class, a flat bed is just one of the perks of a more expensive service package that includes many other luxury amenities.
In contrast, Skynest is a separate part of the aircraft where users can come and go, making it feel more like an added option rather than a replacement for standard seating. Unlike standard seats, the sleeping pods are stacked in a bunk bed style, similar to the hourly sleeping pods available at some airports. This means that passengers will need to bend down or climb a ladder to access their pod, which can be stacked up to three levels high.
Building a New Service Trend in Aviation
The launch of Skynest reflects a broader trend in the aviation industry as airlines are offering more premium experiences. Skynests target a middle to upper-class demographic rather than those who can spend thousands on a single flight. The flight from New York to Auckland is expected to last around 18 hours, departing in the evening from New York. According to time zone calculators, the best time to sleep to maximize adjustment to New Zealand's time zone is during the latter half of the flight, so you can wake up around early morning Auckland time.
With only six sleeping pods and two four-hour sessions available for each flight, this could create a situation where the best booking times will be snatched up quickly, encouraging early reservations. While currently only available on select flights, this may serve as a trial to see if it attracts budget-conscious passengers.
Without a doubt, this is one of the first times that the luxury of dedicated sleeping space has been offered to non-premium passengers, and it may predict future aircraft design trends.
