American Airlines has recently cut back on numerous benefits for basic economy customers, transforming the relationship between the airline and passengers into a purely transactional one.
American Airlines Increases Baggage Fees
American Airlines has announced a $10 increase in baggage fees, following a trend set by other airlines like United, Delta, and Southwest. Notably, if you purchase a basic economy ticket, the baggage fees will be an additional $5 compared to other fare classes.
Changes to AAdvantage Benefits
Starting May 18, AAdvantage members will no longer enjoy free seat selection, complimentary cabin upgrades on domestic flights, or the ability to confirm upgrades for basic economy tickets. Additionally, the boarding process will change, reducing priority for AAdvantage members.
Impact on Business Travelers
This is particularly concerning for business travelers who often spend more on higher fare classes during the week but also need to fly with family on weekends. American Airlines had previously promised better service for those who spent more.
When Relationships Become Transactional
However, these changes have reduced the airline-customer relationship to a purely transactional one, with no loyalty shown from the airline. Customers no longer have guaranteed benefits, making it easier for them to switch to other airlines.
Impact on Relationship with Citibank
American Airlines risks damaging its relationship with Citibank, especially as the airline seems to be tightening its grip on its ELITE customers without regard for loyalty. This could lead to a decrease in spending on AAdvantage credit cards.

How Airlines Use Basic Economy
Basic economy is essentially a tool airlines use to differentiate ticket prices. They aim to keep fares low for certain customers without lowering prices for those willing to pay more.
Constant Policy Changes
Since the introduction of basic economy in 2017, American Airlines has continuously altered its rules and benefits. It seems they no longer feel the need to inform customers about these changes.
Basic Economy Passengers Allowed to Bring Carry-On Luggage
In 2018, American began allowing basic economy passengers to bring carry-on luggage, making this fare class more appealing compared to United. However, they still do not allow basic economy customers to select their seats in advance.
Basic Economy Customers Cannot Earn Miles
In 2021, American eliminated the ability to earn miles on basic economy tickets, a decision that disappointed many customers. This move has cost the airline the opportunity to attract new passengers to the AAdvantage program.
The reduction of these benefits presents a significant challenge for American Airlines in maintaining customer loyalty. While cutting miles for basic economy tickets may save costs in the short term, it could lead to substantial losses in the future.
