Currently, most airlines in the U.S. offer a basic economy fare, primarily to compete with budget carriers and fill potentially empty seats. However, the reality is that airlines are not just looking to attract customers with low fares; they are also pushing passengers to spend more to avoid using this service. In other words, basic economy is becoming a form of penalty, encouraging travelers to steer clear of it.

Recently, American Airlines announced a series of changes to its basic economy service, starting with tickets purchased from April 9, 2026. Specifically, the baggage fees for basic economy tickets will be $5 higher per bag compared to standard economy fares. This means the first bag will cost between $50-55, and the second bag will range from $60-65, depending on whether you pay in advance or within 24 hours of your flight.

Beginning May 18, 2026, basic economy tickets will no longer be eligible for free seat upgrades or upgrade combinations. Cash or mileage upgrades will still be available, but at variable prices.

Notably, from May 18, 2026, basic economy tickets will also no longer allow free seat selection, even for premium members.

The Unique Features of Basic Economy

This is just one of many negative changes American Airlines has implemented for its basic economy service. At the end of 2025, the airline announced that basic economy tickets would no longer qualify for AAdvantage miles or Loyalty points accumulation.
