American Airlines is making a comeback in Venezuela after years of absence. Flights from Miami to Caracas and Maracaibo are set to resume in April 2026.

American Airlines Returns to Venezuela

Just a few weeks ago, American Airlines announced plans to resume flights to Venezuela, but details on schedules and routes were still unclear. Now, the airline has officially announced when it will restart operations, even though some aspects remain uncertain.

Official Information

American Airlines will be the first U.S. airline to restore non-stop passenger flights to Venezuela. The airline plans to operate daily flights, which will be conducted by Envoy Air, a wholly-owned subsidiary of American Airlines, operating on behalf of American Eagle. The flights will utilize Embraer E175 regional jets.

Specifically, American will operate a 1,360-mile route from Miami (MIA) to Caracas (CCS) and a 1,189-mile route from Miami to Maracaibo (MAR). While tickets are not yet on sale, the airline has announced that flights to Caracas are set to begin on April 30, 2026. However, this route will only be operational once all government approvals and security checks are completed.

Commitment from American Airlines

Nat Pieper, the Commercial Director of American Airlines, described the new service as follows: “American’s Miami hub is the main gateway from the U.S. to Latin America, and our service to Venezuela is an important part of our history and future. Our commitment to connecting Venezuela with the U.S. has lasted over 30 years, and we look forward to new opportunities for commerce and family connections that our service will bring.”

Nate Gatten, Executive Vice President of American Eagle, also expressed optimism about the plans: “American is the first airline to announce plans to restore service to Venezuela, and we are excited about the progress we have made with both governments. We thank U.S. Transportation Secretary Sean Duffy, Secretary of State Marco Rubio, and the entire administration for helping us reconnect the U.S. with Venezuela. Our return would not be possible without this strong collaboration.”

American Airlines' History in Venezuela

American Airlines began operations in Venezuela in 1987 and suspended flights in 2019. Over the years, it was the largest U.S. airline in the country and even had an Admirals Club in Caracas. The prospect of American returning to Venezuela is certainly intriguing to follow.

The current situation in Venezuela is quite complex and controversial (something everyone can see, but…), and since this is primarily a travel blog, I don’t want to delve too deeply into that issue. However, I do have two notable perspectives related to the airline service.

Security Challenges and Considerations

First, I am very curious about American’s ability to provide this service in relation to security assessments and working with labor unions. Initially, the crew may only operate daytime flights. However, I don't think this will go smoothly, as I envision that labor unions will have many concerns.

Secondly, as an aviation enthusiast, I am excited to see Venezuelan airlines returning to the U.S. The stunning Conviasa Airbus A340-600s would be welcome to fly over Miami any day, and I’d love to see them more than at destinations like Moscow (SVO) or Tehran (IKA)!

Conclusion

In summary, American Airlines plans to restore flights to Venezuela, becoming the first U.S. airline to announce such plans. The airline has stated that it intends to begin this service as early as April 30, 2026, pending government approval and security checks. It will be interesting to see whether this service actually materializes in the coming months or if it remains a far-fetched hope given the uncertainties still at play.
